News Update - May 2025

Engineering notes

By Tony Massau

Holidays of various personnel have conspired to delay removing the water tanks and fitting the boiler into the chassis of the loco, nonetheless this is expected to happen soon. In the meantime, the manufacture of more crinoline bands for the boiler barrel has continued and completion of the vacuum pipe runs under the left-hand tank has been done whilst the tank is still in situ. There has also been some vacuum pipework done between the main frames prior to the installation of the boiler. There will be a final section to make from between the main frames up to the ejector on the side of the smokebox in due course.

In the machine shop, large nuts have been made which secure the valve heads to the piston valve spindles. Another job has been the manufacture of the tops for the oil reservoirs on the coupling and connecting rods.
