News Update - May 2023

Engineering notes

By Tony Massau

Further stays have been fitted into the firebox although there are many more still to be fitted.

The water tanks are to be removed to enable various attachments, etc. to be added such as lengths of angle which will help secure the from cab spectacle plate, pipe brackets, water level ball float mechanism and so on. It is a safer working environment to have the tanks on the ground to carry out these tasks rather than on the loco. Some of the lubrication pipework has been temporarily removed particularly around the mechanical lubricators whilst the tanks are off. However the situation of absent tanks will ease the installation of some lubrication pipework around the underside of the rear of the smokebox. Progress has also been made with the drive mechanism to the mechanical lubricators

Cab window frames continue to make progress as does machining of the carriage warming reducing valve. Some progress is being made with the front sand pipes.

One year has now passed since the tragic loss of our friend Chris Proudfoot and a wreath has been placed on 82045's smokebox for a while to enable those who remember him to pause and reflect. A small brass plate bearing the name Chris Proudfoot has been secured to the underside of the fireman's seat.
