News Update - April 2026

Engineering notes

By Tony Massau

The crossheads are being finished by having the whitemetalled sliding faces machined and oil grooves cut, plus the hole drilled through the bottom slipper into the oil well under the gudgeon pin. The proper shims for the slidebars are being machined.

The slidebars for the valve crossheads have been away for case hardening and finish grinding. Various pins, bushes and oil caps are being made for motion components.

Work continues on the trial fitting of the firebox backhead cladding. Once some of the control components are attached, the intention is to make a start on some of the pipe runs.

Manufacture of the superheater elements has been completed.
